How to Turn Off Incognito Mode (Chrome/Firefox/Mac/Android)

Incognito mode is a mode in Google Chrome browser which allows its users to browse the internet without recording their history. This mode automatically removes the search history, entered information and cookies when you close the tab. It is very useful when you want to enjoy browsing anonymously. However, incognito mode may cause a problem if you want to know what others have access to on your device. Even kids can access any website through incognito mode and you won’t know about it.  For this reason, you might want to remove or turn off the incognito mode. On iOS, private mode in chrome cannot be removed. There are some methods to disable incognito mode on windows, Mac, Android and Chromebook. Let’s see the methods to disabling it.

How to turn off incognito mode on Windows:

There are two methods to turn off incognito mode on Windows through Registry Editor and Command prompt. Let’s start with the Registry Editor, and if it fails you can go to the command prompt.

Method 1: Disable incognito mode using Registry editor:

  1. Press ‘Windows key and R’ at same time to open the Windows Run dialog box. Type regedit and press enter.
  2. The Windows Registry Editor will open on the screen. Now copy the below path and paste it into the Registry Editor address bar and then press enter.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies
  1. Here, you need to create two new keys. For that, first, you have to right click on policies, click the new key and enter Google.
  2. Then, right click on Google, click on the new key and enter Chrome. Now, you have to click on Chrome.
  3. Now, right click the registry ‘IncognitoModeAvailability’, and then choose the ‘Modify’ option. A new dialog box will show up.
  4. Enter 1 in the ‘Value Data’ box and press OK. That’s it. Turn off the Registry Editor and go to Google Chrome. Now you can notice that the incognito mode has disappeared completely.
  5. If you want to enable the incognito mode, do the same steps and enter 0 instead of entering 1 to enable it.

Method 2: Disable incognito mode using command prompt:

Sometimes incognito mode is not displayed in the registry editor. In that situation, you have to use command prompt to disable the incognito mode. This method will create the absent key from the registry editor. Let see the steps,
  1. open the start menu or press the windows key. Type cmd in the search bar and then right on the command prompt from the search result.
  2. Click on Run as Administrator option to open an elevated command prompt console.
  3. Type this command or copy and paste it: REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome /v IncognitoModeAvailability /t REG_DWORD /d 1
  4. Press Enter. Once the ‘Operation completed successfully’ message comes on the screen, turn off the Command prompt window and restart chrome. Now you can notice that the incognito mode has disappeared completely.
  5. If you want to enable the incognito mode later on, simply open the command prompt and type or copy paste the following command
  6. REG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome /v IncognitoModeAvailability /f
  7. After you reopen chrome, you should see the Incognito option again.

How to turn off incognito mode on Mac?

It is much easier to disable incognito mode on Mac when compared to Windows. Here are the simple steps:
  1. Open the ‘Terminal’ console on your Mac computer. You can access it by typing ‘Terminal’ in Finder.
  2. Type the following command line: defaults write com.google.chrome IncognitoModeAvailability –integer 1
  3. After typing that command, press Enter. After running the command line, close the terminal and restart your Mac. To confirm, open Chrome, then go to chrome menu. You will no longer see the new incognito mode option.
  4. If you want to enable the incognito mode again, simply type the same command and replace the –integer 1 number with the –integer 0 number and re-run the command in terminal.

How to turn off incognito mode on android phone?

Unlike Windows and Mac, there is no built in way to disable the incognito mode on Android. However, there are third party apps available to install for disabling incognito mode on Android.

Step 1: Open the Google play store on your Android phone and search for ‘Disable Incognito Mode’ and install the app when you look at it.
Step 2: After completing installation, launch the app and the tap Open Settings. On the next screen, turn on the DisableIncognitoMode option.
Step 3: A popup message will appear on the screen which asks you to give permission. Click on ‘Allow’ on the popup box.
Step 4: You can also return to the app and tap ‘Hide icon after setting’ to make the app disappear from the phone’s app screen. Open chrome and click on the menu. Although you can see the new incognito tab option listed, any attempts to open that will fail.
To enable incognito mode again, launch the Disable Incognito mode app, tap Open Settings, and then move the slider to off mode, which is next to the DisableIncognitoMode.

How to turn off incognito mode on Chromebook:

Step 1: Login into the Google Admin Console at admin.google.com by using your administrator level credentials.
Step 2: Click on ‘Devices’ and then select ‘Chrome Management’, under the heading of ‘Device Settings’ at the left side of the screen.
Step 3: In that, click on ‘User and browser settings’. Locate the ‘Security’ option by scrolling down and clicking on it.
Step 4: Now select the ‘Disallow incognito mode’ option from the drop down menu of Incognito mode field. And then click ‘Save’ at the top of the screen.

Although private browsing through incognito mode is very useful, using it too much can cause you to accidentally lose important information. Disabling incognito mode helps you to prevent other users from misusing your browser and monitor what your children are doing online.
